Elgin, JC Higgins, J.C. Higgins, They're All Sears bikes, and all freaking awesome!! I love that the Firestone bikes are all the same frames too... It's too bad there isn't more information out there about these bikes as they totally kick ass. Yes, they're not quite as good quality as a Schwinn, but they're absolutely serviceable and personally I find they fit taller riders a bit better. One really could ask why AREN'T these bikes ruling the world about now?!?

4 Days of Fun

by Bryn — last modified May 19, 2009 11:14 PM

Well after a bad start last week turned out pretty darn nice!! Thursday New West run, Friday Cemetery Ride, Saturday DBS Ride, Sunday Kits Beach Ride!

So Wednesday was a rain-out last week, leaving me at about 10 days of no riding.  Bah.  Not digging it.  Even worse was last week was Bike to Work week which I managed to do a grand total of ZERO times - that puts my score for the last 3 years at 8 out of 15 possible days for the "event" - gonna have to do better next year!!

Thursday we had one of the best runs I think I've ever had - did the Greenway out past the South side of Burnaby lake - that trail is GREAT!!  It's not actually open to bikes so choose your timing well - I wouldn't recommend blasting through there on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon for instance, the trail is just too narrow.

Oh yeah, Thursday meet up story...

Wednesday evening I had a few texts back and forth with people, yeah, not going to happen, too damn wet...  OK, maybe tomorrow, right?

Thursday rolls around, I sent out a text just saying "Riding tonight!"

Well to me that meant "Meet up at the usual time at the usual place" but sometimes you need to really be more specific...

It only takes me 10 minutes to get down to our normal meet up spot from my place so I usually leave right around when we're planning on meeting since people generally always show up a bit late (cruiser time) - anyhow I made dinner for A and I and then went to grab my phone as I was heading out the door.

5 missed calls...

Uh... OK... Check my messages, "Hey, it's 7:30, where are you at?"

Uhhh... Leaving my house?  Like always?

Head out the door and give a call back to Danu, he says "OK, well we're all ready to go, wanna do the Greenway?"  "Damn straight..." "OK, let's meet up at Victoria and Broadway"

Sold - heck I'd rather descend down there than roll all the way to the bottom of the hill and then climb back up again, so that sounded perfect to me.

Get down to BW and Vic, nobody there yet but that was no big shock, I was pretty fast.  Take a seat, begin my relaxation.

After about 5 mins I get a text from George saying "5 of us at Green Timbers, you almost here?"

OK, I'm not super familiar with Surrey.  So I'm thinking "hmm, there's the green benches that are supposed to be baby trees just a block and a half from where I am right now, guess they're down there..."

Slowly roll down that way, hey, nobody here... Wtf?

Give Danu a shout - "We're almost there!"  "OK, you have George with you?" "Huh? No, just Tim and my other buddy..."

Uhhh.... OK, now I'm confused, so where's george and his crew at?  So I give George a call...

They're in Surrey, and just thought it would be funny to text... Little did they know just how perfect the timing was!!

Alright, now this just leaves one problem... There's a couple people who were supposed to be meeting at Legoland, and I never rolled down there.  Give them a shout, yup, sitting there going "Where is everyone?!?"

D'oh.

Well eventually all of us got ourselves together in the same place and had a wicked ride - Greenway, New West, SkyTrain up to Patterson, roll back in to Vancouver and finished it off at the Cemetery.  THAT got me back in to the swing of things - it's actually super super easy when you do it like that - the SkyTrain takes care of all the uphill.  :D

That brings us around to Friday...

We broke a cardinal rule of Fridays and stopped at Trout Lake for our first break, and of course lost a couple people.  But it put us on the perfect line to head straight up to the Cemetery from there.  We all knew Saturday was (supposed to be) a decent size calendar ride - you know what that means - so we rolled out at a decently early time - ie still the same day as we started on...

Saturday saturday saturday...

Well when you see "Meet up at 1:00 PM, Lost Lagoon Roundabout" you think "OK, we're doing a park ride!"

DBS had some different ideas though - the concept wasn't bad, but the big problem was nobody reallly knew about it till MAYBE a day before and even then only if they subscribed to the ride alert emails... (which you can do on the Cruiser Calendar page!)  The idea was everyone would show up, pay $10 (donated to charity) and do a bike scavenger hunt.  The idea was to get photos of a bunch of different places throughout the city.  Most points got a trophy, and every photo got you an entry in to a bike draw for a new Electra cruiser.

Only problem is, when everyone is showing up expecting a cruiser ride (IE all hanging out all day) and the theme instead is "compete against eachother by staying as far away from one another as possible" it doesn't really fly with the bulk of the crew...

So somewhat predictably we ended up with a big crew of people loitering around at the Roundabout wondering when the ride would start... Throw on some tunes, ring some bells and WE'RE OFF!!!  Pretty much your bog-standard park ride, only big event really was Chops getting a flat out by the water park.  I of course forgot my camera, but never fear, there WILL be photos posted, perhaps on our all new secret section that has yet to appear...

Ehem...

That just left Sunday!

Given this was now Day 4 I was pretty much ready for a super Jamaican speed day.  Chuck and I did a pretty good 20-footer, rolling to our first stop at Leg-In-Boot Square, followed by Boot Hill, followed by Kits Beach.

Yum...

Hot sunny day...

Beach...

You do the math!!

After getting some sun for a couple hours we headed back up here for a BBQ feast - I think I'm STILL stuffed!

So that's what I did with my long weekend, even if the days didn't quite line up... ;)

This weekend is ROD'S BIRTHDAY RIDE which incidentally is my 4th Anniversary riding with Rod's crew...

There are 2 rides a year that you CAN NOT MISS.  You just straight up can't.  Seriously, if you want to call yourself a cruiser, you better be at at least ONE of them, and even that is kind of blasphemous for me to even say.  Both would be better.
