Elgin, JC Higgins, J.C. Higgins, They're All Sears bikes, and all freaking awesome!! I love that the Firestone bikes are all the same frames too... It's too bad there isn't more information out there about these bikes as they totally kick ass. Yes, they're not quite as good quality as a Schwinn, but they're absolutely serviceable and personally I find they fit taller riders a bit better. One really could ask why AREN'T these bikes ruling the world about now?!?

I love spring!!!!!

Gathering

Another weekend rolls on in!!

Well, after the torrential rains the past few days I was really looking forward to some nice dry weather... Thankfully Mother Nature hooked us up!  I took a few photos, check 'em here...

About 30 of us showed all told... Hello to all the first timers who joined!!  We've had new riders pretty regularly now that the weather is warming up, always good to see.  Also a big hello to the BMX contingent!!  You're definitely welcome!!

So, where to roll, where to roll... Lots of legs in the evening - fairly warm, definitely dry although there was one looming could just above Cypress.  We did the park last successful Friday so something different was in order.

SuburbanA bunch of us wanted to go up into East Van... Not the right ride for the evening though.  OK, so let's choose a route that will make everyone happy - stay flat but get a decent length ride in, save the park for the tail end.  Get a little urban in there just for a taste...  Sounds perfect!  And a new route is born... Click Here for the 'Contrast' Route Map

We headed out at about 8:30 - bee line for Coal Harbour.  The group got broken up a bunch right at the beginning - about a dozen riders didn't notice the other half of the group take off.  Ooops... Thankfully they weren't TOO far behind us, I waited for everyone just past Cardero's until we were all together again.  Rolled on to Crab Park from there for our first official stop... Pretty much that was the first opportunity to gather everyone up together again.

From there we started the income climb from the very bottom of Vancouver.  Rode the overpass from Crab towards Main but headed off Alexander to Dunlevy before we continued south.  The area is a little sketchy but not really a big deal when there's 30 of you!  Cruised on past the Pat Pub across Hastings into Strathcona, basically the reverse route of Rod's Wednesday Ride for Amber and I as we're usually coming FROM Science World towards the Pat.

Definitely lots of sights to see in that area!!  I dunno, I think it's good to roll through the downtown east side - far too many people living in Vancouver don't really know the deal down there.  It's always better to have a face on the place rather than just thinking of it like it's some far away battle ground.

Anyhow, we played traffic marshal and got everyone through as a group, then rolled over to False Creek.  Quick jaunt along the SeaWall right up to Stamp's Landing for a quick break.  Stamp's Landing is one of the few bathroom stops open for the ladies - plus there's off sales too!!  Dirty Don wasn't out last night so I rode the back end of the ride, made sure we were all together.

Granville Island
Continued on to Granville Island for our 'real' stop... Tunes playing, everyone in great spirits, good times... We picked up another rider or two along the way as well - the usual "Hey, you're going the wrong way!!" and then wait and see.  They either keep riding and ignore you or turn around and join you.  Nothing ventured nothing gained...

I think we were in Granville Island for about an hour or so - totally gorgeous evening, that cloud from earlier was gone leaving us with a few little fluffy guys here and there, just enough to keep some heat in without making any threatening moves...

BMX ParkingThe BMX guys showed us how to park our bikes properly - in a pile!!  Yeah, don't think I'm going to be doing that with my cruiser any time soon.  These guys are wild - anything they can jump off of, on to or otherwise pull some kind of trick off of they do it.   I gotta get some video one day when it's lighter out - first time I saw these guys was during one of Rod's Brickyard rides back in 2005 - they were ripping along in Gastown just hopping anything that came along...

Well, not really any point in heading much further West along that side... Not unless we were prepared to go all out and hit up Spanish Banks but that will be a ride for another night.  OK, next stop Rocky Point!! Hopped on and started our trek...  Amber and Pops took off over the land bridge up towards our place so I took a brief breather and said goodbye.  Got ourselves rolling again till we were over near Leg-In-Boot square where we found Jason with 2 bikes but no other rider...

Apparently Jon had not just gotten a flat but had completely blown apart his tire.  Even better it was a 28" British bike - nope, nobody's got a spare tire for that kicking around.  Jon had gone out in search of the group - they were still inbound to Granville Island I guess at that point.  Chris and I waited for a bit with Jason until Jon's scout party returned with him sitting on the handlebars.  Chris and I made sure they were ok to find us later on and then took off to catch up with the group, or at least that's what we thought!

More Granville IslandWe booked over towards Science World - found the shore crew waiting there for us.  I thought we were the tail end of the ride but there was only maybe 6 people there already.  Ok, so where is everyone??  Did they go on to the point??  Turns out they were behind us the whole time!! I look back and see everyone streaming on in.  Crazy - I totally didn't think we were at the head of the pack especially after stopping with Jason, but go figure.  Continued on in to Rocky Point and took another break... There's washrooms in the Casino so it's another good stop for the girls - just remember you'll need ID to get in there.

Rocky Point ended up being just a bathroom stop really - it was about 11:00 by that point and we still wanted to make a crack at getting food.  Rolled out to the Burrard Bridge and had another brief stop.  Said goodbye to a rider or two there - see ya!!  Then rolled on towards Denman.

Came up the hill to the washrooms - OOPS! Patty wagon, about 4 cop cars, a good 6 or 8 cops all over the place and some guy in cuffs.  Well, at least they're already busy... Roll on by, nothing to see here... That's what I mean about that spot being a little heatscore from time to time!  I swear every fireworks the cops are there with some guy in cuffs.  There's so much going on all over the beach on Friday nights that they can pretty much just roll up there, get out and find someone to arrest or whatever right off the bat.  Hehehehe...

We stopped just around the corner, said goodbye to another couple of riders who'd parked over near the Roundabout.  Forgot to mention it at the time but there's the Cardero bike path that cuts right across the West End over to Coal Harbour.  Oh well... now you know!  Definitely better than rolling up Denman street...

Beach FireIn to the park!!  We waited up at Second Beach until everyone was back together - we had a scout party that headed up Denman for food.  Rolled out to Third Beach to enjoy one of the many beach fires along there...

As the clock wound around the riders started trickling out - I guess it was about 11:30 by the time we got to Third Beach, maybe a bit closer to 12:00... We had a pretty decent core group though that stuck it out to the end.  Our BMX bretheren are definitely in for the long haul - I finally headed out around 2:00 myself leaving them at the beach...

That Bike Again...On my route home through False Creek I spotted Rod's Hawthorne locked up to a pole... This bike is haunting me!!  How many times now have I said I'm all in to it??  Yargh... Especially when the problem REALLY is space!  These things are an addiction!!

I guess it was probably close to 3:00 by the time I got home - never really checked the time or anything.  Still nice and warm, totally dry, can't beat that!  Another awesome Friday - can't wait for the next one!!
