Elgin, JC Higgins, J.C. Higgins, They're All Sears bikes, and all freaking awesome!! I love that the Firestone bikes are all the same frames too... It's too bad there isn't more information out there about these bikes as they totally kick ass. Yes, they're not quite as good quality as a Schwinn, but they're absolutely serviceable and personally I find they fit taller riders a bit better. One really could ask why AREN'T these bikes ruling the world about now?!?

Cruiser Commuting

I've been using my Rat Rod as a commuter bike for the last while! Wow, I can actually DO this!

Sometimes when you're out cruising you're having such a good time you forget you're even getting any exercise!

The last week of May was Bike To Work Week, sponsored by the BC Cycling Coalition... Well, since I'm all bike bike bike all the time, I figured I had better give it a go!  I work in Burnaby right by Metrotown - not exactly the lowest point in the city by any means, but we've done enough rides out that way before.  Helps that my Rat Rod is a nice light 3-speed!  My total ride is about 13-14k each way depending on exactly what route I go and it takes me about an hour to get out there in the morning... Last year I gave it a shot but just wasn't in good enough shape to do it more than once or twice.

So here we are in 2008... My work place has a bike storage room, lockers and most importantly a SHOWER!  Burnaby building code actually requires all new buildings to have "bike friendly" facilities.  We just moved in to that office space last year and the shower, etc wasn't done yet so this is really the first year I've gotten to take advantage of things.  Our office had a team - we came in 4th place for Burnaby btw for average km per rider - that little bit of competition really helps make you stick to it.  No good if you decide to just sleep in and take the car anyways, you're letting down your team mates!

I think one of the best parts of Bike to Work Week was getting your "routine" down.  Now that I know how long it takes to get there, I know I have some clean clothes and things at work, etc it makes life a lot easier.... I've actually been riding out now most of this week too!  The fun thing is I'm rolling on this primer-grey cruiser and there's not all that many cyclists on their commuter rides who can keep up with me!  Who says you need 21 speeds, derailers, chains falling off and all that other BS?  Cruiserz 4 Life!

That's so true! I might not be able to keep up with the roadies on my '38, but in 2nd gear, i can out run almost any of the commuters in their spandexx and their $2000 bikes with all the gear on my Schwinn. And I'm not even commuting, I'm ON VACATION!
