Friday December 8th
Great night to get out!
Smaller group as to be expected - if I had to take a SkyTrain or a SeaBus to meet people at this time of year I don't think I'd be super in to it. At the meetup we had myself, Amber, David and Mad Dog with Dylan as a last-minute arrival. Good thing about a group that size is you've got a lot more freedom to go wherever.
We rode to the Water Park - it's pretty chilly out around the SeaWall right now so we decided to head up through the middle of the park there. As I started coming up over the hill I spotted all the lights up by the Petting Zoo - can't pass that up. We rolled on up there and stopped outside for a bit before heading in. FYI the washrooms there are open because of the train running - good stopping point at this time of year as there aren't many options.
Since there were only 5 of us we headed in through the crowd to look at the lights up close. All the lights get put up by the fire department - makes sense, they've got the ladders and stuff. They also had this lovely 1953 Chevrolet fire truck parked there!!! We rolled our cruisers on up next to it and stopped for a bit, chatted with some firemen, snapped some pictures.
Oh man, that was so freaking cool. My first thought when I woke up this morning was "Fire truck!". The firemen were totally nice and definitely in to the cruisers. We chatted with them for a bit, I think they liked the change from the millions of kids getting their picture taken.
The big tree is all lit up of course, this year with all LED lights. It looks pretty crazy, well worth riding by. If you look in the photo album for the ride there's a couple of abstracts.
Next stop was the Burrard street bridge. Haven't had any J-skids in a while so everyone decided to show their stuff a bit. No videos - I was out of space on my camera by that point but Dylan has been practicing!
Kendal was finishing work at midnight, it was about 11:30 so we took the slow route over to meet her at work, stopping by the Casino along the way. Once we had Kendal we popped on over to the Babylon Cafe for some foooooood. Yum. Rode back on down towards BC Place from there - Dylan lost his chain en route, good thing he doesn't have a coaster brake! Popped back down to the Casino and had some beers, chilled for another bit, soaked up the 'scenery' as it were.
We rode straight over to the point on the south side of False Creek from there. Dunno how long we were hanging there for but once we finally took off it was 2:00 am. Amber and I took the land bridge across and hauled our bikes up towards the hospital and then home. Awesome night - 7 hours of riding, good times and good people.
