Elgin, JC Higgins, J.C. Higgins, They're All Sears bikes, and all freaking awesome!! I love that the Firestone bikes are all the same frames too... It's too bad there isn't more information out there about these bikes as they totally kick ass. Yes, they're not quite as good quality as a Schwinn, but they're absolutely serviceable and personally I find they fit taller riders a bit better. One really could ask why AREN'T these bikes ruling the world about now?!?

"Last Minute" Ride

Bringing it down to the wire...

Got out early this week for a wicked Tuesday evening ride.  Did the texts in the afternoon, had at least a few people in for the evening.  Then Charles gave me a call - he was done work and already on his bike.  Well, I've got lots of extra time banked right now... Even better one of my techs came back from training on Tues meaning I wasn't the only one in the office.  Perfect!! Outta here...

Came home, changed and yanked out my bike... Right now I'm down to just the Felt as I've got some miscellaneous repairs to do on all of the others.  Anyhow ripped down towards the roundabout on the long route (False Creek) since I didn't want to be doing the more 'fun' parts of downtown right at rush hour.  Met up with Mad Dog along the way and eventually got to the Roundabout to find Chuck and then Jaimie coming along shortly.

Well, we ended up there at the roundabout for ohhh... a good hour and a half at least.  A few more members of our crew came along, next thing you know we've got a real group.  OK, well that's certainly setting the tone for the ride, right?  We managed to get all the way to English Bay before stopping again for food on Denman and then again for a quick pit-stop by the washrooms.  From there it was the Burrard Bridge where we came across a flock of fixies doing J-skids.  I gotta hand it to those guys, they've got some good styles - only thing is they barely make a sound!!  I mean, half the point is the SQUUUEEEEEAL of rubber on pavement!  Anyhow Michael, Danu and Amber met up with us there - the ride grows!

Next stop?  Rocky Point... Wow, that's half way back to my house, what a ride!  A serious 20-footer.  The North Shore crew all took off at that point - appointments, etc... You know the deal.  Well, that left Mad Dog, Michael, Danu, Jaimie and myself to go out there and do some serious riding!

Go East was the motto... Next stop up by Neil's place - nasty hill getting up there.  Onwards to Trout Lake for another quick pit stop - really only a quick one this time!  Michael had heard that the shuttle Atlantis would be undocking from ISS and be visible about 10:35 between the moon and Venus.  We wanted to try and catch it and still had about 30 minutes to kill so we ripped up the BC Parkway trail along the SkyTrain to Swanguard Stadium.  Got there with just a couple minutes to spare, kind of setting the pace for the rest of the night.  Well, we sat there looking at the sky for a good while and kept thinking we were seeing what we were looking for but it kept just being stars coming out.  OK, eventually realized it was 1/4 to 11 and we needed to do a beer pickup.

Mad dash over to the liquor store just off Kingsway.  Damn, closed at 9:00!!  OK, there's the Ramada, let's see if they do off-sales... Roll on in there and chase the door around the building, get in there at 10:52 or so.  Whew, lots of time!!

OK, let's get this ride started... Headed back to the Parkway trail and started the descent into New West.  Had another stop outside of BC Hydro for a bit and then got ourselves to a nice stop just past Edmond's station.  Trains ripping by either way above us - Michael and Danu were in heaven.  Wicked good spot.  Probably stayed there a while longer than we were supposed to though...

Get ripping down the hill to the river... Just getting onto the boardwalk when I look at the time... 12:23.  "Hey, anyone know when the last SkyTrain is?"  Mad Dog goes "umm... 8 1/2 minutes?"

Well, I certainly wasn't going to sit around debating the fact... On my bike and get ripping - did I mention how much I love my Nexus 7?  That thing RIPS....

Get to the Casino just before New West station otherwise known as the only crossing across the railroad line and find...

a BIGASS freight train!  Can't see either end of it, there's a good stack of cars waiting meaning it's been there a while and we're sitting here with only minutes to spare.  PANIC!!  Looking around, there's a set of stairs up to the top floor of a parkade on the other side of the tracks.  Bike on shoulder, feet in gear, hike those stairs!!

We rolled out of the parkade after eventually finding the exit... Look back, the train is STOPPED across the tracks now not moving at all. Good plan on the stairs!  Rush our asses over to the SkyTrain station, STILL got time thank god.  So not in to riding my way back UP to Burnaby thanks.  Well, for future reference the last train is 12:48PM on weekdays.  We got the train before that one.  Cutting it WAAAAAY too close but hey, at least we made it!

Jumped off the train at Patterson to ride back in... I took off for home just a bit past the Cemetery while the rest of the crew kept on going.  Danu and Jaimie actually ended up riding Second Narrows back - no thanks!! I got home at 2:30 as it was... One HELL of a good ride, definitely a 'do again'.
