On Dissension
Like throwing rocks at a hornet's nest...
Well we've certainly stirred things up a bit!!
No, there's no battle royale going on, tide goes in, tide goes out, the cycle of life continues. My comment
was more about some specific troublesome people we've had in the past.
I'm certainly not PO'd that people show up for rides - likewise not
every ride is suitable for everyone. There's a few people who show up
fairly regularly and take off because the ride is too slow, too many
stops, too boring.
We have to accommodate a lot of different riders from people who
get out just a few times a year all the way through to those of us who
ride several times a week. On the "Dissension" ride most people wanted
to go do a big uphill ride. 3 people didn't. They did something
different. That's fine...
The original Dissension posting had some things that straight up weren't true.
There was a comment about another rider that I straight up don't
believe and what I was saying was taken totally out of context. The
idea was to stir things up - it obviously worked! But this site isn't
about trash talking other members of the cruiser community, hence the edit.
Regardless, we've certainly had a lot of discussion about all of
this over the past week. In the end everybody got the night they were
looking for. The uphill crew got the ride we were looking for and the
flatlanders got what they wanted. Would our group have been happy
riding back and forth through downtown a couple of times and then
sitting at the Loose Moose? Probably not. Would the Dissension group
have been happy with the ride we did? Probably not.
So here's the deal to everyone out there... Where we're going any
given night is always up for discussion. If you've got something you feel
strongly about speak up but understand that you've got to convince at
least 60% of the group before it's going to happen. Are we going to
charge up to the top of Queen Elizabeth Park because one person out of
20 wanted to? No way! Likewise are we going to ride around the park
once and call it a night for the same reason? If you don't want to go where the group is going you don't have to, we don't mind. But please at least tell us you're taking off so we don't spend the rest of the night wondering where you are.
Sometimes the group gets going at a bit of a rip... That doesn't
mean we're not cruising. Cruising is being out having a good time on
your bike. Remember those summer days when you were a kid trying to go
as fast as your legs would take you? Guess what, we still feel that
way. I don't have a leash on the faster riders, about the best I can do
is try to communicate better where our next stop will be and make sure
we wait up for everyone when we get there. I ALWAYS carry my cell phone on rides - my number is on the site, use
it if you get lost or are hanging way back and I'll do what I can to
try and take care of you. 604-762-8760...
Anyhow, tonight should be a wicked good time... Weather is great, low is 8 degrees by the water, who knows where we'll go or when we'll get there but I know for sure we'll all have a good night!
