SRAM It Up A Notch
Finally got to test ride a SRAM hub!
I've been eying the SRAM catalog for a while now, specifically their internal gear hubs. I think by this point we all know that Shimano puts out a fantastic 3 speed, and Sturmey Archer make a totally "respectable" hub these days as long as stopping isn't important. But the big wild card has been SRAM - their hubs just aren't that common on bikes over here!
Well, after a series of problems with the single speed hub on his Felt, Chuck bit the bullet and went for an upgrade. Obsession Bikes up on the shore fitted him with a new SRAM T3 coaster brake hub! The SRAM has a 186% range, compared to 178% on a Sturmey AW or Shimano 3-speed so it's a bit wider range too - that'll be good for hauling ass!
One thing to note, the brake on the SRAM is NUTS! It felt like power brakes on a car to me - you really don't have to put any pressure on it to stop, which means you're not wasting a whole bunch of your back pedal force on the hub mechanism itself.
After he's rolled on it for a while I'll do a follow up, but initial impressions are good!
