Vancrusiers Restored

The Vancruisers server LITERALLY blew some time Sunday. We're back though!!

Backups are good.

Like having a brake OTHER than your coaster brake, it's important to have options when things go wrong!!

The server holding up Vancruisers was an older 2005 era machine of "mediocre" quality, but it's been going along for a long time now (even if it HAS been deafeningly loud in my hall closet!!) but last Sunday afternoon it kicked the bucket.  Unfortunately there was no saving it - there's literally burnt components on the mainboard.  Once the magic smoke gets out electronics don't work too well anymore!!

I bit the bullet and bought a new box, so we're back online.  The only thing lost was a few hundred $$$ from my wallet as we had backups.

So anyhow, we're back, sorry for the inconvenience!

Server HW

The new one is an HP desktop actually, running an Intel quad core Q8200, with 8G of RAM and is running Ubuntu Server Edition... Disk is a pair of 500G drives running RAID-1.

Old server was a SuperMicro dual Xeon with 4G of RAM, ie the "original" P4-based Xeon. It was hot, loud, used lots of power and wasn't particularly fast. This is much better!

what's the model number

what's the model number? I might get the mac mini instead ... have to figure out a way to plug it to monitor though .. don't know if I could share the same screen with the new macbook pro via miniDVI or MiniDisplayport somehow so I don't have to get another monitor ...
