new 3 speed hubs without coaster brake?
Up to Vintage Bikes
I was looking at Amazons Shimano Nexus 3 Hub and had add it to my wish but I noticed It has a coaster brake.
Can you get them without, you guy's might think I'm crazy but I like to backpedal way too much to change.
Can this be altered?
It was a good price, Is their another cheep option?
Thanks,
Tim
Yup, you can definitely get coasterless 3-speeds... SRAM, Sturmey Archer and Shimano all make versions without a coaster brake.
One thing I'd strongly consider though is getting one with either a drum brake (SRAM / Sturmey) or a roller brake (Shimano) - that way you don't have to worry about mounting brakes on your bike somewhere. Drums work REALLY nice - unlike rim brakes they're totally impervious to weather plus they won't make a mess of your rims. They're not AS powerful as disc brakes but they're a heck of a lot easier to bolt on to an existing bike!
If you're buying a hub anyways, there's a few other options worth checking out too... SRAM and Sturmey Archer both make a 5-speed internal gear hub as well. The new Sturmey Archer "wide" ratio 5-speeds have about the same gear range as a 21-speed mountain bike. You can get 'em with a coaster, as a freewheel hub (for rim brakes) or as a 70mm or 90mm drum brake. I'd imagine the 70mm rear drum would do for just about anyone who isn't on a tandem. A little bit more expensive than the Nexus 3.
Oh, and no, you can't remove the coaster brake from a coaster brake hub. I can imagine a host of problems that would occur if you were to try...
Finally, if you're in Canada you may want to make sure Amazon will actually ship to you. Generally most of the non-book things on Amazon won't ship up here.
