Can you help ID and Date this bike?
Up to Vintage Bikes
I have a CCM Tandem Bike. I believe the original color to be Metallic
Blue/Green. It is a single speed with coaster brake. The brake model is
64 Hercules. It had 26x2.0 Canadian size wheels/tires. I also believe it
came with a front caliper brake. The serial number starts with the
letter G but is only followed up by 5 digits. I read in a news article that CCM stopped using metal head badges in 1965.
If you can tell me anything more about this bike that would be awesome. Thanks.
Yup that brass badge is definitely on the older end of things, as is the 'CCM' stamped into the top of the fork cap. I'm not aware of any serial number lookups for CCM like there is for Schwinn unfortunately...
There's a few detail photos that would really help:
- Rear dropouts (the shape / style changes over the years)
- Back of head tube (showing how the frame tubes are brazed/welded to the head tube)
- Chainring / cranks
Not promising anything, but the more details like that the easier it is to identify!
Thanks Bryn. I also got this email.
"The original colour was a sort of Peacock Blue, and this was one of CCM's "candy apple" finishes where a thin tinted top coat was applied over a silver base coat. The handlebars, handlebar grips, seats are all original.
The fenders appear to have been changed - the originals were white and were the traditional CCM Gothic style. The original wheels were, of course, 26 X 1 1/2 F12 Canadian size (CCM V160 rims). The spokes were
12 gage. The missing chainguard is a problem since they would be extremely difficult to find used. They may have had "CCM Imperial" on them. Your tandem appears to have been made in late 1963."
I really wish it was original but what can you do, I still think it's pretty sweet. It's really fun to ride, I even take the dog for runs with it.
Nice!! Where did you get the info from? That sounds like a super useful resource...
I kind of suspected it was a repaint unfortunately - the older types of paints really have a unique look to them that is extremely hard to duplicate, especially since you can't actually use the old chemicals anymore. Either way though it's a fantastic looking CANADIAN bike!
The info came from John Williamson. He's the dude in the article I linked to in the first post. I didn't expect to be able to get in touch with him but much to my surprise I did! Definitely a wealth of information.
I'm tryin' to figure out if I'm about to paint a mustache on a mona lisa.I don't think I am but would like to be sure.I've got a Zenith golden hawk. and can't find anything about it anywhere other then another photo of a different style Zenith from the 50's.I can't as of yet even find the serial #. except for an "X" stamped at the underside of the bottom bracket.any help will probably get ya a cold one at some point.....thanks.
